Nicolás Guillén Landrián was an original, a stupendous documentary filmmaker and painter whose name and work – for a long time – were only remembered by insiders in Cuba. Successful Cuban director Ernesto Daranas ("Conducta") has now dedicated a film to the talented, long-forgotten first black filmmaker in Cuba: an approach to the artist, his work and his life, as well as a documentary about the search for and rescue of film material that had almost been lost. At the same time, Landrián shows in exemplary fashion how the Cuba of the Castros treats people who step out of line.

Ernesto Daranas not only created the documentary film "Landrián", but also found and painstakingly restored ten short films. The restoration of Nicolás Guillén Landrián’s documentaries unearths the lost legacy of Cuba’s first black filmmaker and the dark truths surrounding the censorship of his work by the Cuban Revolution.
